When you think snowboard, imagine the ski board
The ski board industry’s biggest player has been struggling for years to gain traction with consumers and the mainstream media.
Last month, the industry announced it was closing its doors, leaving only the two major players left: Snowboard Retailer and Skisport.
That’s about to change, as the company behind the industry’s largest brand, Ski Boards Inc., said Tuesday that it is planning to create an entirely new ski-board brand, called Snowboard Skins, and hopes to launch it in 2017.
“Skiboards is a new product category and it’s really the first time in our company’s history that we have done this,” said Ski Boards founder and CEO Peter Schlosser, in an interview with CNBC.

Snowboards is the only ski brand that Schlossers has ever founded, he said.
He founded Ski Boards in 2003 and went on to found the popular brands X-Treme, X-Trax and Ski.com.
In the first half of 2017, Skiboards made a profit of $7.8 million, which is up from $4.7 million in 2016.
In October, Schloss, the CEO of the Canadian ski-boarding company X-treme, said he was leaving the company, but declined to elaborate on why.
Ski Boards will launch its new ski board brand in 2017, Schlosseler said.
“Our strategy is to create a brand that is a reflection of our values,” he said, adding that he believes Ski Boards’ goal is to bring the “cool and fun” skiing experience to a broader audience.
He said Skiboards will be a global brand, but the first ski board will be sold in the U.S. and Canada.
Skiboards has a presence in the Nordic region of Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
The brand also has a strong presence in Asia Pacific, but has yet to launch a ski-style product in the United States.
Ski Board skis were one of the first products that came out of X-trax.
X-trays had its launch in 2003, and by the time X-Trays went on sale in 2006, the company had more than 1,500 models.
Ski boards are now available in more than 100 countries.
The Ski Board brand will include a new logo, a more sleek, modern look and a “snowboard” brand, said Schlosseller.
The new brand is expected to be unveiled at a media event in early January.
The ski-inspired name is inspired by skiing and snowboarding, which Schlossels said will be the focus of the brand’s logo.
The name is part of a new ski and snowboard brand launched by Ski Boards, which includes an updated logo, new logos for ski and other brands and an overhauled advertising campaign.
“We want to take the fun skiing experience and put it in a modern way,” said Schlossert, who is the former CEO of Xtrax, which was acquired by Snowboard SKIN in 2018.
“The new ski skis will look like an X-Box and they will be all-new.
They’ll look very modern, they’ll look like skateboards.
They won’t look like a ski board.”
He said the new brand will be available at select retail locations throughout the U, including skate shops, discount retailers and online.
Skiboarding is still the most popular form of snowboarding and Ski Boards is currently the second-largest snowboard retailer in the world behind New Balance.
The U.K. ski-boards giant has a $9 billion annual business and is a member of the World Ski Games.
